I recently was required to set up a two-way SQL Server 2008 failover cluster for ILM 2007. During the setup process I did run into an issue of two with the installation and thought it would be a good idea to share – it might help if you run into the same issue.
Note that this was done with SQL Server 2008 RTM on Windows Server 2008 SP1.
For a great step-by-step process to preparing and installing this check out http://www.mssqltips.com/tip.asp?tip=1687 (Nice work Edwin).
The two issues I encountered both related to adding the second node to the already exiting single-node cluster. When I tried to add the second node I was presented with an error stating:
Failover instance ‘MSSQLSERVER’ cluster group not found
Note: In my case I was installing a default instance of SQL 2008 thus the instance name remains MSSQLSERVER.
At this point the installation stopped and closed. Upon re-trying the installation I was presented with a new error.
The current SKU is invalid
The SKU error was a similar to an installation failure error I experienced with SQL 2005. The fix was the same in SQL 2005 as it is now in SQL 2008. Simply remove the SQL Support Files using Programs and Features. Once the installation process is restarted this error is gone
Now I still however had the error relating to the cluster group not being found. I have verified this process twice in order to check if this works.
In order to fix the error I:
1) Removed the single-node cluster from the MSSQLSERVER using the MAINTENANCE feature in the SQL Server 2008 setup. (Exiting cluster node – Node 1)
2) Re-installed the node 1 cluster using the same settings as previously used.
3) Once complete – now add cluster node 2 using the same installation media / share.
Worked for me !! – Hope it helps.
